Low House Farm Longsleddale. A new Wilderculture Project in the Lake District.
Nestled up one of the lesser-known valleys in the Lake District is a small but very exciting Wilderculture project in early transition. Low House Farm is situated in sleepy but stunningly beautiful Longsleddale.
Low House is owned by the Boyd family who has previously relied upon local managers using a conventional sheep farming system typical of the other lake district farms in the area.
The family has decided that they would like to do their bit in the fight to reverse the alarming trends of biodiversity loss and climate change that we face globally. They would like to adopt a Wilderculture approach – using their land to develop a model of upland farming that mimics nature in order to improve the watershed, increase the diversity of wild species on the farm, as well as sequester carbon from the atmosphere into stable structures in the soil.
We are still in the early stages of transition, we will get regular updates from the new manager Daniel and keep you up to date with the challenges and successes of the journey.
In the short term, the sheep flock has been sold and we are on the search for the right herd of hardy native cattle to embark on the task of regenerative grazing.
Water and grazing plans have been designed, species-rich grassland restoration and river re-wetting plans have been hatched, and a summer’s rest from livestock has given the land a much-needed boost in vegetation height and energy flow through the system.
